LEWISTON - David R. Payne, 26, of Mason Avenue, died of gunshot wounds Saturday afternoon at Central Maine Medical Center. He was a Lewiston Police officer.

A native of Abington, Pa., he was born on Aug. 26, 1961 to the Rev. Raymond J. and Barbara Schaul Payne. He graduated from the Christian Wayside School in 1979, and later attended the Burlington (Pa.) Bible Institute. He graduated from Cedarville College in Ohio. After working in carpentry and construction for several years, he decided to attend the Maine Criminal Justice Adademy.

While in Lewiston, Payne joined Local 545 of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers and was a member of the Blue Knights.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Bailey Payne of Lewiston; a daughter, Erika Lynn and a son, Evan David, both at home.

He is also survived by his parents of Warrensburg, N.Y.; four sisters, Debbie of Clark Summit, Pa., Mrs. David (Beth Anne) Standridge of Rome, Italy, Mrs. Mark (Ginny) Dow of Livermore and Judy Payne of Warrensburg, N.Y-; and his maternal grandmother, Clara Schaul of Trevose,Pa.

The funeral will take place at the Youth Center at 11 a.m. tomorrow, with the Rev. Rick Nesbitt officiating. Payne will be buried in Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn. Public calling hours will take place at Pinette Funeral Chapel, 1065 Lisbon St., from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m. today.

Donations in Payne's memory may be made to the Victory Baptist Church's Teen Fund, Route 202, Winthrop, or in his memory to his children, in care of the Lewiston Police Department, Park Street.
